Also known as a "Hanukkah menorah"

The Chanukiah is a candelabra used specifically for Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Light.

According to the history of the holiday, the great temple was destroyed by the Greeks during the Greco-Judean war.

When the Jews returned to their ruined temple, they could not find enough oil to light their Menorah, a seven-branched candle holder used to illuminate the temple. When almost all hope was lost, they came across one jar of oil that was expected to burn out after the day was done.

One of the miracles of this day was that the small quantity of oil found remained lighted for 8 days.

As a result, every year during Chanukah a special menorah with eight branches and one holder in the middle is lit for eight days to remember the miracle. This menorah is called a Chanukiah.

Each night, we light one more candle than the night before until the 8th night when all of the candles are lighted.

The 9th candle, traditionally in the center of the Chanukiah, is called the Shamash. It is used to light the other candles.

The Chanukiah is only used during Chanukah while the Menorah is used in synagogues year round. Decorated with grapevine design.
