Hanukkah

The festival of Hanukkah (meaning "dedication") marks the re-dedication of the Temple after its desecration under Antiochus IV. Hanukkah commemorates the "Miracle of the Oil".

According to the Talmud, at the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days - which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate new oil.

Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting one candle on the chanukiah each night for 8 nights (until all are lit). An extra candle called the shamash (meaning servant) is used to light the other candles. Click here for more information.

Kiddush Cups

Kiddush is recited at the beginning of each Shabbat meal.

To honor the mitzvah of reciting kiddush, a silver goblet is often used. After the person reciting the kiddush drinks from the wine, the rest of it is passed around the table or poured out into small cups for the other participants.

Kiddush cups make excellent gifts for numerous occasions.

Menorahs

The menorah (Hebrew: מנורה), is a seven branched candelabrum lit by olive oil in the Tabernacle and the Temple in Jerusalem. The menorah is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish people. It is said to symbolize the burning bush as seen by Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 25).

Would make a lovely gift for any occasion! Candles are available seperately on request.

Mezuzahs

A mezuzah (Hebrew: מזוזה‎) is a piece of parchment (usually contained in a decorative case) inscribed with specified Hebrew verses from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21). These verses comprise the Jewish prayer "Shema Yisrael," and begin with the phrase "Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is One."

A mezuzah is affixed to the doorpost of Jewish homes to fulfill the mitzvah (Biblical commandment) to inscribe the words of the Shema "on the doorposts of your house."(Deuteronomy 6:9)

Please note: We sell only the decorative cases - the parchment is not included.
